Zorbtive® is a prescription human growth hormone (somatropin) produced using recombinant DNA technology. It mimics the cellular actions of natural growth hormones.
Zorbtive® is given for several medical conditions. It is primarily prescribed for children with growth failure in terms of reaching normal growth milestones and for catch-up growth in children who do not have closed growth plates. It is also a common medication for adults where it can be prescribed to treat adult-onset or “age-related” growth hormone deficiency (AGHD), or for adults experiencing muscle wasting caused by HIV-AIDS and for the treatment of short bowel syndrome in adult patients receiving specialized nutritional support.
This is a highly purified preparation. It is sterile, lyophilized powder in 8.8 mg vials for single-patient use. Each vial contains 8.8 mg somatropin, 2.05 mg phosphoric acid, and 60.19 mg sucrose.
HGH injections like Zorbtive are used to replace growth hormone in adults and children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) due to inadequate production of natural growth hormone. It children experiencing growth failure, it mimics the actions of growth hormone by stimulating skeletal growth and increasing the number and size of skeletal muscle cells. It also influences the size and function of internal organs and has important effects on metabolism. Growth hormone injections for sale in the US are also prescribed to increase growth in children with certain conditions that affect normal growth and development, such as Prader-Willi Syndrome, Small for Gestational Age, Turner Syndrome, and Idiopathic Short Stature.
Zorbtive and similar drugs are used medically to increase body weight and physical endurance in patients with HIV who have HIV-associated wasting syndrome. It is also used to treat short bowel syndrome in adults and adults who are suffering various symptoms of age-related or “adult-onset” growth hormone deficiency.
When used as prescribed for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency, Zorbtive has many benefits. In addition to increased skeletal, cell, and organ growth enabling children to achieve proper stature, other documented benefits of Zorbtive in adults include:
When used as directed and with proper medical advice, this medication is generally regarded as safe. However, like any drug, it has some potential side effects, warnings, and contraindications.
According to the manufacturer, the most common side effects of Zorbtive® are:
Some of the potentially severe, though less common, side effects of Zorbtive® include:
Never use this product without proper medical advice. Your prescription for this drug will be tailored to best meet your particular goals and lifestyle. You will be carefully monitored over the course of your treatment with HGH injections, so any chance of side effects should be kept to a minimum. Tell your doctor if you are experiencing any of these adverse effects, particularly knee, hip, or joint pain, as these can be signs of a serious medical condition. Seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing any signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as respiratory distress, cold sweats, dry mouth, or difficulty breathing.
According to its manufacturer, this drug should not be used in patients with acute critical illness due to complications following open heart or abdominal surgery, multiple accidental trauma, or acute respiratory failure. It is also contraindicated in patients with active neoplasia (either newly diagnosed or recurrent). Any anti-tumor therapy should be completed prior to starting therapy with any HGH product. Zorbtive® is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to growth hormone.
Drug interactions could occur. Tell your healthcare provider about any other drugs you may be taking, especially birth control pills or any hormone treatments, as these can cause the most serious drug interactions. Be sure to include over-the-counter medications and herbal products, as these, too, could trigger adverse effects.
Before accepting a prescription for Zorbtive®, tell your doctor if you:
In addition, tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Zorbtive® may affect how other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how Zorbtive® works.
See your medication’s insert for a complete list of potential drug interactions.
Growth hormone is administered subcutaneously, usually with a 29-gauge needle. This medication is supplied in single-patient vials, each containing 8.8 mg of somatropin, a white lyophilized powder for injection. HGH injections are given subcutaneously, which means just below the skin. Our healthcare team will show you exactly how to administer your Zorbtive injections.
Tips for Safe Injection:
The dosage of this medication varies by age, weight, and the condition it is prescribed for. For adult patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS), the recommended dose of Zorbtive is approximately 0.1 mg/kg subcutaneously daily to a maximum of 8 mg daily. A special diet may also be required if taking it for SBSd.
If this medication is prescribed for HIV-related muscle-wasting or for the symptoms of adult growth hormone deficiency, your dose will be modified accordingly. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. The dosage is based on your age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.
It is recommended that all versions of HGH should be stored under refrigeration at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Somatropin or any brands of HGH injections should never be frozen, and this medication should be kept out of direct light.
Never take more than your prescribed dose of this medication. Though rare, it is possible to overdose on HGH. Overdose of Zorbtive® could lead to hypoglycemia and subsequently to hyperglycemia. Long-term over-dosage could result in signs and symptoms of gigantism and/or acromegaly consistent with the known effects of excess growth hormone.
As with any medication, in case of accidental overdose, seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Keep Zorbtive® and all prescription medications out of the reach of children.
